ANGEL FACE (Preminger, 1952) - Talk about Freudian! Oh, sure, Mitchum’s there with his bedroom eyes, but the true love story in this film is between a girl and her father. Hell, Mitchum doesn’t even seem to be that into her, and you wonder why he sticks around as long as he does, even before the pivotal event half-way through. He’s not your usual film-noir sap: he’s easily seduced by money, and he sees through her ‘angel face’ pretty much right away. He might even think her more evil than she is, the irony being that she’s not even the most evil person in the film (definitely nuts though). No, her lawyer takes the cake - he doesn’t care whether she did it or not, he just doesn’t want her estate compromised.
