THE KING’S SPEECH (Hooper, 2010) - Yeah, sure, it’s quite middlebrow, and can hardly be called “surprising” or “innovative”, but it’s pretty good in that category. It’s quite funny - Helena Bonham Carter is clearly having a blast, and it’s infectious - and Hooper doesn’t always go for the obvious directorial choices: I liked, for instance, that we don’t see the red light blinking before the titular speech, just its reflection on Firth’s face. The ending was a bit too generically uplifting for me, and I thought the nazi-stuff was a bit too underlined, but overall, I found this quite enjoyable.
