YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE (Lang, 1937) - my second Lang of yesterday night, which I didn’t like as much, despite the fact that it stars a ridiculously young-looking Henry Fonda (he was 22 at the time). There were some touches I loved, though, for instance the noiry shots like the one above, and the fakeout where we see a newspaper saying “Taylor jury deadlocked”…after which the camera zooms out and we see it’s just the middle of three possible front pages. For a Bonnie and Clyde tale, though, the female character is too milquetoast (Sylvia Sidney’s more interesting in FURY), and the deck is too obviously stacked against the main protagonist - give me GUN CRAZY any day.
