THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING (Huston, 1975) - When in Morocco, we visited Ait Benhaddou, a kasbah where many movies were filmed, and which you can see lying behind Sean Connery and Michael Caine. The big gate in front, just to (our) right of Connery’s head, is actually not authentic, but was built in the sixties for LAWRENCE OF ARABIA.
Whatever the motivation, I really liked this movie. It’s funny without being too much of a trifle, the interaction between Connery and Caine is great, and well, it’s Huston. It is also quite racist in its depiction of the various indigenous people, but I don’t know how it could have been avoided with this story in this place and this time with these characters. Not an excuse, of course.
