MOROCCO (von Sternberg, 1930) - Apologies for the dearth of updates since the new year. I haven’t abandoned the tumblr (now that the project is over, I’ll be less stringent with myself about posting, but I still intend to keep a film diary here), it’s just that I was away on holiday in… Morocco! Hence my choice for this movie, which is disappointing plot-wise but delivers on the Dietrich front. The scene where she wears tails* and kisses a woman on the mouth is still pretty astonishing, and the way she looks when she searches for Gary Cooper in the crowd of returning legionnaires is great. I can’t find information about whether anything was shot on location, but despite the presence of a few dromedaries, I suspect not. The Moroccan setting does provide some atmosphere, a good decor to make Dietrich stand out even more.

*I’m going to go try tails on soon, since I’m considering them (sans hat) for my PhD defense. It’s the standard outfit for guys, so I figured, why not? Unfortunately, while I’ll look like Dietrich in my mind, in reality I’ll probably look like a squat penguin.
