THE WOMEN (Cukor, 1939) - I thought this would be a good follow-up to CARNAGE (it’s another adaptation of a play with people being catty, after all), but it wasn’t really. In fact, it might be more synical about human nature, since - without needing to relinquish the veneer of civilization - the people here care about nothing but themselves. Oh, and marriage. Their main hobby seems to be stealing husbands from each other. It’s a much better film than the remake*, and it is admittedly witty and well-acted (Rosalind Russell is a blast, and Crawford is regal), but it left me feeling rather depressed. So many great actresses, and do they do for two hours? Fight about men - except for the ten technicolor minutes they spend on clothes. Pfff.
*which is seriously one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. Seriously, AVOID. If you read Dutch, you can find my review of it here. I think it’s the only time I ever gave anything 0 stars.
