TRISTANA (Bunuel, 1970) - I’m closing in on my goal for the year (one new-to-me film per day on average), but I’m behind on writing. I saw this last wednesday already, but had trouble finding the motivation to write, since it disappointed me. I was surprised, because I love BELLE DE JOUR, and this one has the same director, the same star, and even dream sequences in a similar style. Both also explore, in a way, the sexual awakening of the main character. But whereas BELLE DE JOUR continues to fascinate me, the story here seemed to just lie there, and as much as I drool over Franco Nero, he doesn’t really get anything to do. I feel like I just might have been in a wrong mood, though, and the new iPod touch didn’t help my concentration, so this is one I’ll put on the list to revisit in a few years.
