CARNE TREMULA (Almodovar, 1997) - I’m (again) two movies late with these write-ups, but that’s not always a bad thing: later movies can put earlier ones in perspective, and show unexpected parallels. I took the day off today and went to a matinee of BREAKING HYMEN* (don’t judge, please), and it made me think I’d have loved to see Almodóvar’s take on this material. Too strange a thought? Well, this movie does include (opens with, in fact) a delivery in which teeth are used. And Almodóvar’s movie is also all about sex, with a virgin’s first encounter leading to rather unexpected (and not wholly positive) consequences.
Nah, I’m reaching. And to be honest, despite this being probably Almodóvar’s least crazy film, the world he creates is more threatening and surreal than the TWILIGHT one. And when it comes to sex scenes - well, let’s just say trembling flesh is sexier to me than broken headboard. And Liberto Rabal’s lips are more sensual than a Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner sandwich.
