HAMLET (Olivier, 1948) - I had such high expectations for this one. Olivier, Jean Simmons, noirish shadows. And it’s not like it’s bad - it just has long stretches that I found sort of boring. Pretty much all the parts with the King, for instance. As for Olivier, he’s good… but a bit on the emo side. Which is admittedly not that inappropriate for Hamlet, but when you have a boyfriend sitting next to you playing Skyrim and occasionally snorting, it starts to seem a bit over the top. Add that the actress playing Gertrude is actually younger than Olivier, and you get a movie that I couldn’t quite get into - with the full understanding that it’s probably a case of it’s not it, it’s me.
