FRIGHT NIGHT (Holland, 1985) - We had a brownie bake-off last thursday (they were all delicious, so we didn’t end up voting, deciding so many tasty brownies made us all winners), and after we gorged ourselves on chocolate, we sat down to enjoy this one. Chris Sarandon’s just marvelous in it, savouring every word and smirk and evil grin. He’s not the most subtle of actors, but subtlety wouldn’t have worked here, anyway - you need the broad villain to make the whole concept work, and he manages to retain some menace while also being utterly hilarious. I don’t know how Colin Farrell did in the remake, but this is a tough act to follow.
