PILLOW TALK (Gordon, 1959) - For the short, sweet time I had TCM (I miss you!), I had it on practically all the time in the background. I think I only once watched GASLIGHT from start to finish, but some parts of it I’ve seen a dozen times. I also think I saw most of this movie, but with little enough attention that I felt like revisiting it. BF mocked me for watching it*, and I understand why - it’s very mockable - but it’s also quite well-written and light, with some great bantering and the most ridiculous plot ever. In fact, the one thing that doesn’t work is that neither lead is very likeable, but maybe that makes them a perfect fit. And there’s an interesting tension (or frisson, if you like french) watching this while knowing about Rock Hudson’s sexuality: there’s a scene in which he (as Brad Allen) insinuates that his alter ego is “very fond of his mother” that must have been very, very strange for him to play.
*”come on, this makes even MY inner feminist bristle”, or words to that effect - ok, he didn’t really say that, but he was wondering out loud how I could watch it with such lack of irritation.
